Kaokoland Classic

8 Night Safari

Embark on an eight-day expedition through the captivating landscapes of Namibia’s Kunene Region, starting and concluding at the serene Khowarib Lodge. This adventure-rich safari leads you from the cultural hub of Opuwo, where you’ll engage with Himba and Herero communities, to the remote and rugged terrains of Van Zyls Pass and Marienfluss. Along the way, experience the majestic Epupa Falls, observe wildlife in the Hartmann Valley, and immerse yourself in the lives of the semi-nomadic Himba people in Purros. The journey combines challenging drives with moments of tranquillity, such as sun-downers overlooking the falls and wildlife sightings along the Hoanib River. With options for camping under the stars and staying at local lodges, this itinerary thoroughly explores Kaokoland’s diverse ecosystems and cultures, appealing to adventurers seeking both thrill and cultural depth in one of Namibia’s most isolated regions.

Safari Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive at Khowarib Lodge for luxury and comfort on your first evening.

Day 2
After a relaxed evening at Khowarib Lodge you depart with the guide and back up staff and head north to Opuwo. Mix with the Himba and Herero women in this culture-rich town, while we shop for final fresh produce for the coming days. Continue on via Ruacana to Swartbooisdrift and visit the Dorsland Trekkers Monument. Camping by the Kunene River Lodge.

Day 3
Drive through spectacular scenery enjoying the palm trees along the banks of the river. Possible crocodile sightings and many interesting birding opportunities can be seen in the area. Arrive at Epupa Falls and have a sun-downer on the observation point overlooking the falls. Overnight lodging at Camp Epupa.

Day 4
Leave Epupa Falls and head south to Okonguati before turning west into the most remote part of the region. Drive on rough tracks through Otjitanda and begin to traverse the Van Zyls Pass. Wild camping just before the final section of the pass.

Day 5
Drive up to the highest part of the Van Zyls Pass and stop to enjoy the magnificent view of the Marienfluss. We complete our descent for a celebration at the foot of the pass and drive north to camp by the Kunene River.

Day 6
Drive through the beautiful Hartmann Valley seeing Oryx in this harsh environment. Pass the famous “Red Drum” to camp by the Khumib River. (This night can also be supplemented with lodging at Etambura Camp instead of camping, with an additional cost of N$450 per person.)

Day 7
Drive south via the Hoarasib river bed to reach the township of Purros. We visit a local Himba Village in the late afternoon and learn how these fascinating semi-nomadic people live, work, think and worship. You will be able to exchange information and be allowed to take photographs. Overnight camping at Purros Community campsite.
